Please share if you know anyone who lives in Portland and is deaf or hard of hearing.
Thanks to a grant from the federal government, Portland Fire & Rescue will is installing FREE specialized smoke alarms in qualified homes of deaf and hard of hearing Portlanders. These specialized alarms work with standard smoke alarm systems to alert deaf and hard of hearing individuals to the presence of fire or carbon monoxide by emitting a flash or shaking a bed. Firefighters will install the alarm in homes and also do a home safety inspection if requested.
Smoke alarms save lives! Deaf and hard of hearing people need specialized smoke alarms. If you wear hearing aids or cochlear implants that you take off before you go to sleep, you also need a specialized alarm to be alerted to fire or carbon monoxide danger.
