IS BIGGER BETTER?

Is Bigger Better? Not always. When it comes to homes, big ones can be nice, or they can be a burden. Life changes. What once made sense in terms of size, may not now.

E.J., my good friend and fellow Portland Timbers fan, called me and wanted to chat with me about her Mom’s home. We sat down in the dining room of Ms. Joan’s eight thousand square foot home on 30 acres and discussed her future. She had come to the realization that her dream home, built by her and her late husband, was no longer the right fit. The home is beautiful and the entire exterior of the home is structural brick. We are talking old school, full masonry construction. The home is custom in every way and is surrounded by vineyards and farmland. It would be hard for anyone to walk away from. For her, it is time.

We discussed strategies, shed some tears, talked about values and next steps. The best next step arose out of that discussion. We decided that she should purchase her replacement home, first. In a matter of days, we toured one home in Hillsboro, and it was The One. A one level ranch in near perfect condition with a park like backyard. Best of all, it is right around the corner from E.J. and just a short ride from her daughter Ashley and 4 grand kids.

Ms. Joan realized that at her stage in life, a bigger home was not better. It made her life and options, smaller. The new one, at 1300 square feet, is trim in comparison but it lives large in terms of quality, features and it will allow her more time and resources.

So, for the person that is at a place in life where a bigger home is better, there will be a lovely home hitting the market in the spring of next year. We will sit around that same dining room table together and discuss their life’s next steps and if this home may be right for them and their family.

It is a pleasure helping people define and make their next step in life through real estate. Finding their place. It’s what we do.
