Making a House a (Group) Home

As a Real Estate Team, Place Portland is dedicated to helping people find their dream homes. This doesn’t always mean cute little families and classic bungalows. Westside Community Focus is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching independent living skills, as well as providing housing, advocacy and other services that primarily assist adults who have developmental disabilities.
When I met the good folks at Westside Community Focus, they had a particular set of criteria for a house – it had to accommodate 5 residents, as well as overnight staff, have multiple living areas, be wheelchair accessible, have emergency egresses, and the more bathrooms the better! All of this, and walkable to public transport and other amenities that could make life easier for their clients.
It was a tall order, and we looked at almost every 6+ bedroom house on the East side. After every showing, I became a bit more of an expert at what makes a good group home. When I came across a 7 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with no less than FIVE half baths, I knew I was looking at Westside’s next place. Located on a quiet street in the heart of Woodstock, this one was a slam dunk!
Although the house was great, we were blessed with a seller who was incredibly dedicated to making it the perfect fit. From doorknobs to hose bibs, the house received a complete punch up. Now, after just one month, the house is all fixed up and ready for Westside’s unconventional family to enjoy their new place!
