The Zipper

We all know and love food carts. The one’s that experience success often times are faced with needing to make a next step. A step up to a space that has brick and mortar, not wheels. Kevin Cavenaugh found an answer to that dilemma with his first micro restaurant project, The Ocean. The Ocean is the home to 24th and Meatballs and several other mini restaurants.

His next venture is a project called, The Zipper. It has a shared kitchen space, communal restroom facilities, covered seating and an outdoor common area. The parcel, shaped like a slice of pizza, is formed by NE Sandy and NE Pacific, in Portland, Oregon.  It’s just a quick bike ride from my house and I couldn’t be more excited.Work has just begun, so don’t head over looking for a bite to eat just yet.

I’m a big fan of Kevin’s work because he creates new categories. He accomplishes this by building projects that are innovative, site specific and appropriate for the neighborhood. I mean, who else is developing micro restaurant space? A developer that focuses on how a project interacts with the city grid. A civic artist. A City Builder. That’s what I want to be when I grow up.

Do you have any great projects going on in your neighborhood?
