Sandy
Sandy is a city located in Clackamas County, Oregon, and is named after the nearby Sandy River. It is east of Portland and west of Mount Hood on the Barlow Road segment of the Oregon Trail (now US Highway 26). The city serves as the western gateway to the Mount Hood Corridor and is a bustling community only minutes from the Mt. Hood Recreation Area, including: Mt. Hood Meadows, Timberline Lodge, Ski Bowl which provides seasonal opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing. Sandy is also only minutes to surrounding towns such as Welches, Rhododendron, Zig Zag, and Government Camp.
The City of Sandy is the commercial center of a rural area with a population of approximately 20,000. Sandy has a thriving business base, including many stores and services for visitors to the Mt. Hood Recreation Area. U.S. Route 26 runs through the middle of Sandy, forming downtown Sandy’s Pioneer and Proctor Boulevards. Sandy is the home of the annual Sandy Mountain Festival, the Sandy Oktoberfest and the yearly Hometown Holiday Festival and Parade.
Housing in Sandy is varied and eclectic. With many vacation homes, cabins, and condos as well as newer subdivisions and older homes situated on acreage.
There are three schools within Sandy’s city limits: Sandy Grade School, Cedar Ridge Middle School and Sandy High School. Those schools are administered by the regional Oregon Trail School District.
Boring
Boring is approximately eight miles south of Gresham and about the same distance from Clackamas, both suburbs of Portland. The town is roughly 20 miles from downtown Portland.
The community of Boring boasts numerous nurseries and farms scattered throughout the area providing local produce. The Boring Farmer’s Market takes place every Sunday from May through September and offers local produce, plants, flowers, handmade items, fresh food, kid’s activities, and live music. Liepold Farms is a family favorite in the Fall boasting 5 acre corn maze, pumpkin patch, and children’s pavilion.
Damascus
The City of Damascus is located east of Happy Valley and Interstate 205 and west of Boring. The city is served by the North Clackamas, Oregon Trail, Estacada, Centennial, and the Gresham-Barlow school districts, with the latter also being the second largest employer in the city.
Damascus boasts many farms and is a favorite among locals for seasonal fresh grown berries and produce. A growing community with great local shops, restaurants and cafes, Damascus offers newer subdivisions, older homes with larger lots, and everything in between!
Public schools in Sandy, Boring, and Damascus are served by the Oregon Trail School District which is about 4,200 students strong – with one high school, three middle schools, six elementary schools, and one elementary charter school.
